April Garden Tips

  • Prune Forsythia when flowering is finished; remove only those stems that have bloomed.
  • Give winter/spring flowering Heathers a ‘haircut’; snip off flowering stems just below spent blooms to allow for fresh new spring growth and a tidy appearance.
  • Feed Roses by mid-month with granular Rose Food or Smartcote 14-14-14 slow release fertilizer.
  • Fertilize lawns with a recommended spring lawn food.
  • Fertilize cedar hedges with granular Evergreen food.
  • Remove the faded flowers from spring blooming bulbs and fertilize with bulb food to promote development of next spring’s flowers.
  • Plant Dahlias, Gladiolus, Callas and Canna tubers outdoors.
  • Stake peonies and other tall growing perennials that need support.
  • Sow seeds of beets, peas, lettuce, swiss chard, spinach, cabbage and onions outdoors where they are to grow.
